BOSTON -- Celtics big man Al Horford said he plans to travel with the team on a two-game road trip that starts Saturday night in Indiana with hopes of returning to game action after being sidelined for nearly two weeks due to a concussion.Horford, who has slowly navigated the NBAs return-to-action protocol, missed his fourth straight game with Fridays visit from the New York Knicks. He engaged in an individual workout before Fridays game and is encouraged by his recent progress.Ive been banged in the head before, but nothing like this, said Horford, who was reluctant to get into the specifics of the injury or his recovery.Im getting better each day and the past two days have been really good for me. I was able to get on the court a lot more and run up and down. Do a lot of movement, a lot of stuff I wasnt able to do a couple of days ago.The Celtics had lost all three games without Horford entering Fridays tilt with the Knicks and have been a mess defensively. Its been difficult [to watch] just because you want to be out there helping your teammates, fighting every night, Horford said. Its tested my patience this time. Everyone here has been very supportive, starting with coach [Brad Stevens]. Just down the line all the guys. But Im just very encouraged by my work today. I feel like Im in pretty good shape.Stevens said that Horford would only travel if he had the potential to play on the trip. The Celtics visit the Pacers on Saturday night, then play in New Orleans on Monday. The Celtics have urged Horford to be patient in his recovery.I dont want to even act like Im a doctor but, from what I understand, each concussion is unique, Stevens said. It was diagnosed as a mild concussion but as long as there are symptoms that reoccur then that continues the protocol. And thats good. Im thankful Im coaching in an era where thats the case. The most important thing is that his health is prioritized. And mild or not, a concussions a concussion. The 30-year-old Horford, who signed a four-year, $113 million deal with the Celtics this offseason, said he was now operating with an awareness that head injuries are much different than typical bumps and bruises.I honestly didnt understand it before now, Horford said. I would always hear stuff, see documentaries and stuff. But you dont fully understand -- you know, with an ankle, with a knee, Ive played through plenty of stuff and its no problem. But with the brain, its a little different. Its been a challenge for me because Ive had to be patient. The good thing is that now Im at the point that Im starting to feel good again. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs defended their treatment of Alex Smith after he twice had his head slam into the turf in Indianapolis, saying Monday that their quarterback passed concussion tests on the sideline and in the locker room after both of the hits.Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder also said team physicians and an independent neurologist do not believe that Smith sustained a concussion.Still, he will be evaluated by another neurologist in Kansas City this week before determining whether he can play against Jacksonville on Sunday. Its certainly possible, Burkholder said Monday. Well go through the return-to-play protocol and see where hes at it. But yes, its possible.Smith was hurt initially when he was hit while sliding in the first quarter Sunday, and Nick Foles took over for about a quarter while Smith went through the protocol. He returned to the game and was hit again on a slide in the second half, and thats when the Chiefs decided he would not return.Foles proved to be everything the Chiefs hoped for as a backup. He finished 16 of 22 for 223 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in leading Kansas City to a 30-14 victory. There was some confusion when Smith was ruled out of the game with a concussion.Burkholder said he incorrectly reported the injury designation, and in fact Smith was still going through the protocol the second time when that announcement was made. He also said statements made after the game that Smith sustained a concussion were inaccurate.I was with him on the plane, talked to him last night, hes been in this morning -- hes absolutely asymptomatic, Burkholder said. Hes had a concussion before, missed time. Hes aware of the situation.Smith isnt the only Chiefs player dealing with injury issues.Running back Spencer Ware did not return to the Colts game after sustaining a concussion -- Burkholder said he did not sufficiently pass the same tests that Smiith went through.ddddddddddddAnd at this point, it appears unlikely Ware will be available against the Jaguars. That leaves the Chiefs thin at running back because Jamaal Charles, who is trying to come back from ACL surgery, was due to see Dr. James Andrews after experiencing swelling in the knee.Chiefs coach Andy Reid characterized the visit as routine, but there is concern that Charles has not progressed as quickly as anticipated in his recovery. He has only carried the ball 12 times in three games, and was not active against Indianapolis because of the knee.We dont have any information yet, Reid said Monday. Hes been checking with Dr. Andrews, thats the person who did the surgery. This isnt uncommon. Lets just figure it out and go from there. If Ware and Charles are unable to play, Charcandrick West would be their only healthy running back on the active roster. Darrin Reaves and Zac Brooks are available on the practice squad.Meanwhile, offensive lineman Parker Ehinger sprained his knee and did not return against the Colts. If hes unable to play this week, Zach Fulton would pick up where he left off Sunday. One bit of positive news was the progress of outside linebacker Justin Houston, who is coming back from ACL surgery. The star pass rusher returned to practice two weeks ago and has made noteworthy improvement, though it remains uncertain when Houston will be able to play in a game.Reid said it would be a stretch for him to play against Jacksonville. What were going to do is take it like we have been, see how he does this week, Reid said. If he is ready to go, he can go. Ill listen to the docs and talk to Justin and see how hes doing.I can tell you hes made tremendous strides from that first week to last week.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
