Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Kimmo Timonen said on Thursday that his chances of playing this season are "slim" after he was diagnosed with having several blood clots over the summer. Timonen, 39, underwent treatment during the summer for clots in his lower right leg and both lungs. "My desire is I want to play but [the] chance of me playing is really slim," Timonen told NHL.com on Thursday. "Thats the fact. But Im ready to wait for that chance and see how I feel." Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said that the veteran blueliner will have a follow-up exam in January and will remain out for "a period of time here, meaning months. "Well wait and see how his clots have cleared up and move along the process from there," added Hextall. "First and foremost as an organization were concerned about Kimmo and his health and his family. Then comes the hockey part. But if hes capable of playing well certainly welcome him back later in the year if hes able to play again." The Flyers signed Timonen to a one-year contract extension in June. In seven seasons in Philadelphia, Timonen has won five Barry Ashbee trophies as the teams best defenceman, including the last three. Timonen had six goals and 32 points in 77 games for the Flyers in 2013-14. He has also made two of his five Olympic appearances with Finland during his time as a Flyer, winning bronze in both 2010 and 2014. He was recognized for his 1,000th career NHL game in March 2013. The Arena das Dunas in the northeastern city of Natal sustained minor damage during the protests, but demonstrators stayed away on Sunday and officials said the stadium passed its first test, with only minor adjustments needed going forward.BOSTON -- The Red Sox demoted struggling switch-hitting outfielder Daniel Nava and recalled right-hander Alex Wilson on Wednesday. Nava, 31, was a big part of Bostons run to the 2013 World Series title, but was hitting just .149 with two homers and three RBI when he was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket before the game against the New York Yankees. Wilson went 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA in 26 games with the Red Sox last year. Boston starters were hit hard recently and manager John Farrell went to his bullpen 10 times in the past three games, forcing him to add a reliever. "Given the number of innings by our bullpen the past four, five days, we needed to add another arm, some help out there," he said before Wednesdays game. "Also, we felt like we need to find a way to get Daniel Nava going again. His struggles at the plate, I think, are evident. Were trying to get him back to seeinng him be the player he has in the past.dddddddddddd" Batting mostly from the left side of the plate in a platoon with Jonny Gomes in left field, Nava hit a career-best .303 for Boston last year with 12 homers and 66 RBIs. "Weve got to get a guy back that was pivotal to our success last year, particularly from the left side of the plate," Farrell said. "Its going to take some at-bats to do just that." Nava had been in the majors for a good portion of the past two seasons, so Farrell knew the news would be tough for the player. "As you might expect, he was disappointed," Farrell said. "I cant say there was disbelief. It was a disappointing message to deliver, given his role last year and the contributions. But in combination for the need for another reliever, while not liking it or deep-down agreeing with it, he knew it was a necessity."
