Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett will miss the remainder of the season. Texans coach Bill OBrien on Monday said the team was still evaluating the quarterback, who reportedly suffered a torn pectoral muscle, but on Wednesday the fourth-year pro was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Mallett was on last weeks injury report with a strained chest muscle, listed as questionable for Sundays game against Cincinnati. He tried to play through the injury against the Bengals and struggled during the contest, completing only 21-of-45 passes for 189 yards with an interception in the 22-13 loss. The Houston Chronicle on Monday reported the severity of Malletts injury and said he would need season-ending surgery. Mallett was making just his second career NFL start last Sunday. He had taken over for Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 11 against Cleveland and threw for 211 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception in a 23-7 win. The 26-year-old is in his first season with the Texans, who acquired the Arkansas product from the New England Patriots in a trade just prior to the start of the campaign. Fitzpatrick started the first nine games and is expected to return to the role. He has connected on 61.8 percent of his passes for 1,960 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. The Texans on Wednesday also signed quarterback Thad Lewis, who started five games for the Buffalo Bills last season. Lewis appeared in six games overall in 2013, throwing for 1,092 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Houston also signed safety Terrance Parks to the practice squad. After India went 1-0 up with three to play following a 246-run win in Vizag on Monday, their captain expressed his surprise that Englands batsmen had shown no intent as they instead embarked on an attempted blockathon to bat out 150-plus overs to achieve a stalemate.Englands tactics appeared to be working while captain Alastair Cook and his teenage opening partner Haseeb Hameed were sharing a defiant stand of 75 in more than 50 overs. The best of the action from day five in Visakhapatnam But once they were both gone on the fourth evening, England folded fast on the final day - bowled out for 158 shortly after lunch.England must therefore plot a route back into the series, starting in Mohali on Saturday - and from the tone of Bayliss response to Kohlis observations, it seems unlikely they will be distracted by any such noises off the field. He can say that. Hes just playing the game as well, said the Australian, who like Cook before him voiced no regrets about the collective decision to cut out the strokeplay - in theoretical pursuit of a national-record 405 to win - and stick to all-out defence instead. Kohli said Englands batsmen showed no intent during the second Test We could have been 180 [on Sunday night], or we could have been six down as well. We felt we had to have as many wickets in hand as possible [the next morning].England still had eight, despite the hammer-blow departure of Cook to the last ball of the fourth day, but no one could get set again to launch a rearguard as Ravichandran Ashwin finished with an eight-wicket match haul.Bayliss added: Yes, wed love to have had a few more runs on the board. But some [people] have criticised us in the past for losing too many wickets going for runs. Ian Ward, Nasser Hussain, Michael Atherton and Ian Botham sat down to discuss Englands 246-run second Test loss to India in Visakhapatnam The way they went about things was fine. All we asked the players to do was go out and play as well as they can in their fashiion.dddddddddddd Two guys at the top of the order got their heads down and showed the other guys what was possible.England cannot afford to be sidetracked by arguments over past events, of course, if they are to battle back into the series - as they did so wonderfully under Cook on their last Test tour to India, when they won 2-1.Bayliss has issued a statement of intent to repeat the dose. Were not here to make up the numbers, he said. Were here to compete and to win a Test series. Sky Sports Black Friday sale Upgrade to Sky Sports now and get 12 months half price! If they are to be successful, they must also avoid any more self-inflicted setbacks such as their first-innings collapse to 80 for five in reply to 455 in Vizag - the passage of play which put them in a perilous position, long before it came to how best to try to salvage a draw two days later. We lost four wickets in a short space of time, said Bayliss. It put us under pressure for the rest of the match, and the boys are very disappointed at losing a Test.[But] weve competed very well in both these Tests and put India under pressure as well. Our challenge is to continue doing that to give ourselves a chance of winning. Will Jos Buttler come into Englands Test side after defeat to India in the second game of their five-match series? England are expected to make at least two changes for the third Test, where a renewed emphasis on seam over spin may be in the offing for both teams - at this venue only.As for Englands batsmen, Bayliss believes they have fared as well as anyone could have expected, considering only three have previously been on a Test tour to India - and of them, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow played just one match apiece four years ago.Weve come to India with basically only three guys who have been here before, and only one of the batters, he said. Englands problem positions Bob Willis assesses Englands selection dilemmas ahead of the third Test with India I think what weve done here in the first two matches is a feather in the cap to the young guys.Theyre learning all the time. Theyre disappointed in there, but theyre learning all the time. Theres no disgrace in the way theyve played.Even so, England are expected to drop out-of-sorts No 4 Ben Duckett in favour of a return for Jos Buttler - as a specialist batsman rather than wicketkeeper. The tourists, who flew to Chandigarh on Tuesday and will not practise on Wednesday, appear unlikely at this stage to risk Stuart Broads foot injury at the weekend - with Chris Woakes fit again after resting his knee niggle.Upgrade to Sky Sports now and get 12 months half price.
