Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly wasnt revealing much about his quarterback situation after playing two at Texas. We still have two very good quarterbacks, he said Tuesday. It appeared that DeShone Kizer had mostly settled the issue in a 50-47 double-overtime loss at Texas on Sunday night. He completed 15 of 24 passes for 215 yards and five touchdowns, also running for 77 yards and a score.Malik Zaire, the former starter who missed most of last season because of an ankle injury, completed 2 of 5 passes for 23 yards. The competition was one of the countrys most intriguing in fall camp, and Kelly apparently will keep some mystery to it, not saying as of Tuesday whether hell continue to use both quarterbacks when the No. 18 Irish play host to Nevada (1-0) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.The game will mark the 250th consecutive sellout at Notre Dame Stadium, a streak that began after the 1973 season.Kelly said Kizer missed a couple cupcake throws against Texas and misread a couple of protections that led to sacks. For some reason, he missed, Kelly said. He checked out of a pass play into a run play late in the game where we had a pass on, and just tried to do a little too much.So a lot of it is probably late in the game trying to do a little bit too much. Just let the offense run itself. You being the player that you are, youre going to make something good happen instead of trying to manufacture something.Kelly also talked about keeping the No. 2 quarterback engaged in the process. You cant let your teammates down and you cant let yourself down, Kelly said.Thats really 99 percent attitude and accepting the role that you have. If you cant accept the role, then you need to move out of the way and let somebody go into that role that can accept it and prepare themselves accordingly, so when they are called upon theyre ready to play.Nevada won its opener, 30-27 in overtime against visiting Cal Poly of the Football Championship Subdivision. Junior running back James Butler scored the winning points on a 5-yard run. He has 2,100 career rushing yards. The Pack is a run-first offense out of the Pistol formation. Returning starting quarterback Tyler Stewart completed 17 of 23 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns last week.Notre Dames reconstructed and relatively inexperienced defensive line gave up 237 rushing yards to Texas, including 131 to DOnta Foreman and 53 -- including three rushing TDs -- to quarterback Tyrone Swoopes. Two of Swoopes scores came in overtime after Notre Dame had rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit.Linebacker Nyles Morgan had a career-high 13 tackles. Freshman safety Devin Studstill had four tackles in his debut and could start this week with safety Avery Sebastian being evaluated for a concussion. So, too, was wide receiver Torii Hunter Jr. Both likely will be evaluated close to game time.A couple of bright spots on offense were sophomore receiver Equanimeous St. Brown (five catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns in his first start) and running back Tarean Folston, who missed most of last season because of a torn ACL. He had a 54-yard run on the games opening drive and closed with 88 yards on 18 carries.Folston and running back Josh Adams will be a formidable challenge for Nevadas defense, which gave up 191.4 rushing yards per game last season. Fourth-year Wolf Pack coach Brian Polian called them both big dudes.Polian is returning to Notre Dame after serving as an assistant from 2005 to 2009 under head coach Charlie Weis. He is embracing the opportunity, saying, Who wouldnt want to play in front of Touchdown Jesus? He added: Were excited to go play at a really cool place. This is Nevadas second all-time trip to South Bend. Notre Dame won 35-0 on Sept. 5, 2009, marking only the third time coach Chris Aults team was shut out in his 25 years as the Wolf Pack coach. On the eve of the 2006-07 season, LeBron James stood along the baseline at Quicken Loans Arena and looked up toward the ceiling.Man, James said, scanning the rafters, weve just got to start putting some banners up there.James was coming off his first taste of the playoffs. He recorded a triple-double in his first game, made a game winner with less than a second left in his fifth game and nearly pulled off a historic comeback before losing to the Detroit Pistons?in seven games in the second round. He tasted some success, and as he embarked on his fourth season, he started to feel his place. As James scanned the upper reaches, there was a single banner marking a Cavs accomplishment, a Central Division title in 1975-76. That was the so-called Miracle of Richfield team from 30 years earlier, a team that won 49 games and one playoff series and was a legend in Cleveland for it. The bar for such status was not high. There were six jerseys retired next to the lone banner, only one of them belonging to a Hall of Famer. That was for Nate Thurmond, who played 114 games with the franchise near the end of his career. He was beloved for those 114 games, but again, the bar was relatively low with a team history essentially devoid of greatness. When James was a teenager, he started attending games at the arena, and he couldnt believe how bad the Cavs were, how empty the arena often was, with its bright blue seats seeming like a neon sign of disinterest. During his senior year of high school, he went to several games, was given courtside seats and visited the locker room. His thought was pretty clear after he watched that 17-win team with the lowest attendance in the league: They were awful, and he didnt want to be a part of it.When James made his first trip to Boston two weeks into his rookie season, his then-coach Paul Silas pulled him aside after the morning shootaround and showed James the 1974 and 1976 championship banners that Silas helped the Celtics win. It took him a moment to find them; there were so many hanging that they were hard to locate. As the old coach pointed, his wide, proud smile emerged.Youll get one of them someday, Silas said to James before bellowing out one of his famous laughs. But youll never be better than I was! Before the 2015 playoffs, James wanted to illustrate to his teammates what they were playying for.dddddddddddd. In 2011, when he was about to start his first playoff run with the Miami Heat, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra had displayed the teams 2006 championship trophy in front of the players as a symbolic reminder. This time around, the Cavs didnt have anything to show off, so James brought his championship rings to practice. His teammates?Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love had never been in a playoff game before. Now, it was James taking on the mentor role and showing off the proud symbols of his work.Fifteen years after he hoped hed never play for the Cavs, 14 years after Silas shared some of his proudest accomplishments, 10 years after James lamented the gaping holes in the rafters and two years after he declared he was coming home, a banner will go up Tuesday night. It will be an 8-foot-wide, 14-foot-tall flag placed in the center of all the other banners.Once the championship banner is raised, the Cleveland rafters will have nine titles represented: five Central Division, three Eastern Conference and one NBA. The Cavs had to order a trophy case to be built in their facility to house all the hardware James has helped them win.Im looking forward to seeing that banner go up and it saying world champions, James said. And another one for Eastern Conference champion and for a division title. Its great to see those accomplishments and be a part of it.The rings are special; they are a players private piece of the championship. They are treasured, they are counted, they are worth so much more than the actual value of the gold and diamonds that make them up.But rings cannot be shared. Rings cannot be looked at as a reminder during difficult times in future big games that are sure to be played in the arena. Rings cannot be pointed to 40 years later with swelling pride to the stars of the day. That is why, out of everything James has won in his career and with all the other banners he helped raise for another franchise, seeing the wine and gold pennant unveiled is a moment James has been looking forward to.It means so much to me for my own personal goals, James said. And I know it means a lot to everyone in Northeast Ohio and anyone who has anything to do with Cleveland sports history. ' ' '
