College football decisions often have a domino effect that can change the landscape of a program and nobody knows this more than the upstart Baylor Bears. In 2007, four-star dual-threat Quarterback Robert Griffin III had committed to the University of Houston under then Head Coach Art Briles. When Briles left Houston to take over Baylor, Griffin III, the top commit in Briles recruiting class, decided to follow him. After winning the Heisman in his junior season Griffin was the 2nd pick in the NFL draft. Many thought the Bears would return to the middle-of-the-pack in the Big 12 without their star QB, but all it took was one player and one very gifted head coach to turn the program around. Baylor currently sits at #5 in the BCS polls with a perfect 7-0 record, tops in their conference. They score the most points per game in the country (63.9) and have the 6th best defence (15.9). QB Bryce Petty has 18 TD and 1 INT and former Oregon Duck Lache Seastrunk has 869 yards rushing and 11 TD in 7 games. The offence is incredible, the defence can keep up and all because players are lining up to attend Baylor. 10 years ago Baylor had the 76th best recruiting class out of 117 Division I programs. Colorado State, Louisiana-Lafayette and San Jose State were among schools with better results. Now thanks to Griffin III and the recent success of the Bears program, last year Baylor ranked 31st. And this years crop is expected to be even better. Oregon is three spots higher in the polls and steals much of the attention as the must-watch team in college football but Baylor is every bit as fast and exciting. Baylor scored 8 touchdowns against Kansas last weekend, none of those drives took longer than 2 minutes. The likelihood of the Ducks and Bears meeting in a National Championship isnt very high with Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State still amongst the unbeaten, but it would be amazing if they did. The two schools are both on pace to break the record for most yards-per-game. The one knock against Baylor has been their strength of schedule, but thats about to change in a big hurry. Their remaining five games are against Big 12 teams that are either currently ranked or were ranked earlier in the season. They stay home for dates with #10 Oklahoma and #15 Texas Tech before travelling to No. 18 Oklahoma State and Texas Christian. The finale on December 7th will see the Texas Longhorns come to town in a game that could decide the conference. That sentence alone has Bears fans in a place they werent sure theyd ever get, among the elite teams in a power conference. Baylor has had a swift turnaround thanks to one electric player taking the country by storm. Other notes from around the NCAA: - Many thought Penn State would gain momentum after their thrilling 4-overtime win against Michigan but that didnt prove to be the case. The Nittany Lions were handed their worst defeat in nearly 114 years when they travelled to Ohio State. The 63-14 loss wasnt as bad as the 64-5 drubbing at the hands of the Duquesne Athletic Club back in 1899. - Florida State rolled over NC State with 35 first quarter points. It broke a 4 game losing streak for FSU as a ranked team versus an unranked NC State. - Recruiting kickers is going to become a bigger deal – Missouris undefeated season was shattered when Andrew Baggett missed a 24-yarder in double-overtime to hand South Carolina a victory. - LSU holds the longest non-conference winning streak in the FBS era – 45 straight wins. Part of that comes from scheduling games like this past weekend against the Furman Paladins. - Northern Illinois remained unbeaten with a 59-20 win over Eastern Michigan. 4 different Huskies combined for 7 touchdown passes in the win. QB Jordan Lynch threw for four scores, ran for one and even had his first career TD reception. - More from the kicking game, San Diego State relied on Seamus McMorrow twice in their bid to upend undefeated Fresno State. McMorrow missed two tries, including a 37-yarder as regulation expired that would have won the game. The Aztecs fell in overtime 35-28. - Auburn is on a four-game winning streak for the first time since 2010 when they went 14-0 and won a National Championship with Cam Newton as their QB. Tyler Johnson scored the go-ahead goal on a short-handed breakaway late in the third period and the Lightning clinched a playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over the Canadiens on Tuesday night. "Just being in the right spot and getting lucky sometimes," Johnson said. The win and losses by New Jersey and Washington gave Tampa Bay its first post-season berth since 2011 and only its second in seven years. Montreal ended a five-game winning streak, but also qualified for the post-season by virtue of the losses by New Jersey and Washington. Canadiens goalie Carey Price took some consolation in advancing to the post-season. "Were disappointed with our game today, but big picture, weve got to be happy with that," he said. The win moved Tampa Bay, with a game in hand, into a second-place tie with Montreal in the Atlantic Division. The second- and third-place teams in each division will meet in the first round of the playoffs. "Its just one game, but its really the 76 games all bottled into one," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "What you are really striving for is to win the Stanley Cup, but you cannot win the Cup if you dont get into the playoffs." With teammate Nate Thompson serving a minor penalty for boarding, Johnson picked up a loose puck near the Montreal blue line, skated in on Price and backhanded a shot inside the left post with 7:19 remaining in the game. Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher was on one knee in the low slot when he redirected a rebound past goalie Ben Bishop to open the scoring 10:18 into the first period. Ryan Callahan made it 1-1 on a ppower play 9:19 into the second, skating through the left circle toward Price and lifting a shot high into the net.dddddddddddd. Tampa Bay was on a power play when Alex Killorn closed out the scoring with an empty-netter with 45 seconds left in the third period. Bishop finished with 25 saves, while Price stopped 30 shots. Tampa Bay winger Teddy Purcell slammed a shot past Price with 11.7 seconds left in the second period, but the officials ruled forward J.T. Brown made contact with the goaltender and disallowed the goal. The call drew an angry response from Tampa Bay fans after a replay appeared on the video screen. The crowd also became irate when Montreals Douglas Murray drew a match penalty for an illegal check to the head of fellow defenceman Michael Kostka, setting up a 5-on-3 advantage for the Lightning with 2:13 left in the game. "If the crowds reaction was anything after they saw it, then it seems that it was illegal," Cooper said. "Those are the hits you want to take out of the game. Im sure Murray wasnt looking to hit him in the head." Lightning forward Ondrej Palat, who earlier in the day was named the top NHL rookie for the second time in three months, assisted on the goals by Callahan and Killorn.
